the Artist…Joan
Somerville

Born
in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1961, self-taught artist Joan Somerville
has been painting professionally for just six years –
yet her work has already attracted worldwide interest, with
collectors across the United States, Europe, Hong Kong and
Singapore.
Joan has even received major accolades, including being chosen
as a major prizewinner in the 'Brave Art' competition held
by the Smith Art Gallery and Museum in Stirling, Scotland.
The contest was open to artists inspired by the movie “Braveheart”
(based on the life of William Wallace); and Joan's winning
painting depicted a group of brawny warriors awaiting battle
– determined to defend to the last man – set against
a backdrop of the Scottish countryside.

Joan has had sell-out exhibitions in Glasgow,
Birmingham, London and New York. She is currently represented
by the Halcyon Galleries at the International Convention
Centre, Birmingham, Selfridges and Harrods in London, and
an exhibition is planned for the Halcyon's new gallery in
Mayfair, London, in 2003. Washington Green, Europe's foremost
publisher of collectable art, also publishes her work in
the form of limited edition prints, greeting cards, and
ceramic sculptures. Joan recently realized every artist's
dream by opening her own gallery at Charing Cross, Glasgow,
in autumn of 2002, which is proving to be a major success. |
An
avid people-watcher, Joan's own enthusiasm for life is reflected
in the delightful, fun-loving characters in her paintings.
Her art work introduces you to the anonymous people we see
and meet in our everyday lives, and allows the viewer to
join in on a conversation, pull up a chair at a dinner table
or mix and mingle in a bar. Her humorous portraits reveal
to the viewer how wonderful it is to exist without the veil
of perfection placed on us by society. Fun-loving characters
and quirky titles bring a smile to peoples' faces; she has
a gift for catching the right expression, the indulgent
move, the perfect moment.
Joan’s original watercolours are exhibited in the
United States exclusively by Animazing Gallery in SoHo.
