UNFILTERED: THE ART OF RALPH BAKSHI

Maverick animation director Ralph Bakshi is best known for his wild and cutting edge cartoons, and most people do not know that his fine art is also unique, shocking and filled with complex emotion. In recent years Bakshi has painted quietly in the shadows of his fame, inspired by the hypocrisies and hidden truths within our society, along with the injustices de jour that ignite his passionate fury.

Bakshi piles questions and moodiness onto paper or canvas with sumptuous texture, and launches the viewer into an urban and cynical world, only to leave them hanging there. trying to make sense of the chaos that they must certainly realize is their own life.

These recent works satirize the games society plays and mocks politics as usual. Bakshi acknowledges that his paintings are very personal; "All the chaos I see-- every drop of joy and fear, every bit of adventure & melancholy I feel goes into my paintings." Bakshi has indeed become a formidable contemporary master during his more than 50 years of work.
